Ham, Blue Cheese, and Pear Quiche

Happy Friday! This week for Cook the Book Fridays we made Ham, Blue Cheese, and Pear Quiche from David Lebovitz’s book My Paris Kitchen. Sometimes when I sit down to write one of my “cooking club” posts, all I can think of to say is something along the lines of “it was good and I liked it”. But for this one, my head is swarming with ideas!

I could compare this quiche to the several we made from Around My French Table for French Fridays with Dorie (I like David’s thick and hearty quiche, but prefer Dorie’s crust; also, Dorie’s Spinach and Bacon Quiche will always be my favorite).

I could talk about how my quiche took quite a bit longer to cook than the recipe suggested it would, so I made a last-minute change to my daughter’s dinner so she could eat at a reasonable time, which caused a bit of a meltdown (anyone with a child with autism who has trouble with flexibility will understand…; best quotes from the ordeal: “Mom, you made the wrong dinner!”, and “You accidentally cooked a hot dog”).

Or, I could discuss the fact that some people had trouble with the crust, but others didn’t (I am one of the lucky ones who had no problems).

Instead, I’m going to talk about Food Revolution Day (which is today!). Mardi of eat. live. travel. write, one of our CtBF members (and also a French Fridays with Dorie alumni) is an ambassador for Canada for Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution. The idea of the revolution is to improve access to healthy, nutritious food for children everywhere, improve knowledge about food and nutrition, and to teach people how to cook.

This year, Jamie’s focus for Food Revolution Day is a “starter pack” of 10 recipes that teach cooking skills and provide nutritionally balanced meals. Mardi chose the quiche for us to make as a “starter” French recipe.

For me personally, I am so thankful that I can cook (and actually enjoy it!). I am thankful that I have the means to provide nutritious meals to my family every day.

If you are interested, here are the 10 Food Revolution Recipes: Food Revolution Recipes.

By the way, the Ham, Blue Cheese, and Pear Quiche was delicious. And my daughter loved her slice when we had the leftovers for dinner the next night.

  1. Your quiche looks lovely! I agree about the cooking time! This was a hit ar my house too! 👍👍👍

  2. You are right. Easily overlooked fact that we are able to cook good and nutritious food on a regular basis. You have one big, substantial, and good-looking quiche there.

  3. I like it when you have a lot to say. Please tell your little gal (although I realize that she is not so little anymore) that I have trouble with flexibility also. Tidy. Organized. Everything according to “the plan.” For some reason I have always had trouble with Dorie’s crust and had no trouble with David’s. Go figure. Yes, mine took longer and even longer than yours because of the altitude. I liked, as Shirley suggested. big, substantial and good-looking. I thought my quiche looked like a New York Cheesecake. What about you? Anyway it was delicious and I, for one, am grateful every day of the week that I like to cook and that I do make and bake interesting food. If I hadn’t joined FFWD, I know I probably would not be doing the meal planning and cooking for one that I now do. I am lucky to have found you all and I think you feel that way also.

  4. I had to bake mine longer than the suggested time…about 15 minutes. However, I had no trouble with the crust, and I loved the flavor the cornmeal added. Your Quiche looks wonderful! Sorry, it wasn’t ready for your daughter’s dinner.

  5. I forgot to mention it, but I had to bake mine longer too. I’m so glad that your daughter liked this, even if it wasn’t a hot dog. What’s not to like? It’s filled with creamy goodness. Quiche is such a great recipe to have in your back pocket: ESSENTIAL!

  6. Piebird

Your family is lucky you enjoy cooking!

  7. Your quiche looks great! This quiche is nice but like you, I have another favourite! 🙂

  8. Your quiche looks beautiful! Yes, it’s always tricky when something takes a lot longer than planned. This one did too for me. I thought it was good, but I am with you – that spinach and bacon… yum!!!

Love that you shared your story! Have a wonderful weekend!

  9. I love the thick hearty look of this quiche – your turned out beautifully.

  10. Wonderful post! I’m so glad you had so much to say. 🙂 I’m glad your daughter enjoyed it when she was able to taste it. Though, I think I’m with you – Dorie’s spinach and bacon quiche is my favourite, too. (This one might be a close second.)

My crust broke, but it is so easy to patch it up. Yours turned out lovely… I may need to try baking a little longer like you did next time.

  12. Oh goodness, Karen, I laughed when I saw the stuff about your daughter. My 3-year-old does much the same thing (like when I made the chard pie for Cottage Cooking Club). She was not a fan of the quiche, though I really thought she would be. I guess blue cheese isn’t her thing. Anyway, yours looks great and I agree with you re Dorie’s quiches!

  13. I think Dorie’s crust is my favourite as well but I loved the flavours of this! Thanks for playing along with Food Revolution Day this year!

  14. So thankful to hear others took longer! I was wondering if I needed to get a new oven. I am glad to hear your daughter liked it- it was better the next day

  15. Kitchen Conundrum

Your quiche looks great! Glad your daughter liked it too. Not sure if mine will! I will cook mine a bit longer too based on what I’ve been reading from everyone’s posts. (Playing catch up!)

A lovely meal you had with this quiche! My cousin Donovan likes his meals at his ‘set’ timing too so I understand your daughter’s strict meal times. You did good with this recipe, your quiche look wonderful! I enjoyed Dorie’s quiches too, but this with the cornmeal in the pastry was delicious too.
