Sugar-Crusted French Toast

Happy Friday!  I hope those of you who celebrate had a wonderful Thanksgiving!  We had a delicious treat for French Fridays with Dorie this week:  Sugar-Crusted French Toast.

Apparently in France, French toast is considered a dessert.  But here in the United States we eat it for breakfast.

Making Sugar-Crusted French Toast starts out pretty much like most French toast recipes.  Slices of brioche are soaked in a rich mixture of eggs, whole milk, cream, sugar, and vanilla.  What sets this recipe apart, and makes it extra good, is the sprinkling of sugar on the pan that gives the French toast a caramelized sugar coating.  Oh, my!

Sugar-Crusted French Toast

This is hearty French toast.  I made half the recipe and one slice was definitely enough for one person.  But it was oh, so good.  Perfect for a special breakfast, or any day you feel like indulging.

  2. Totally agree that this is perfect for any time you feel like indulging. (which for me, is far too often….but I will at least have something fabulous when I do !!) I also agree that one nice slice is more than enough- which is something I rarely say. We all enjoyed this recipe big time and I was so happy it came up during a week I had all my taste testers around- everyone loved it. Glad you enjoyed it as well.

    You’re right- one serving IS enough of this. I had to use some weird Italian rolls, and I’m glad I only cooked up one (sliced in half), because that one slice was plenty.

  10. First, I love your snow. It’s fun and definitely puts one in the holiday spirit. In Aspen we have tons of it (snow) on the ground also. Yeah, French toast is just not a dessert for me and never will be. This was a fancy-schmanzy, souped-up version of my Mom’s wonderful plain and simple French toast. I liked it and glad you did also.
